The writing could have also been more focused, especially as it leaves many of its characters lacking in development, its themes not as piercing as they could be had they been given more time to shine. Though the material is incredibly heavy and hard to watch at times, the writers treat the story with care, depth, and empathy. At some point, it gets tedious and repetitive to keep circling Clare’s past trauma and the forward movement doesn’t quite happen until it’s nearly the end, with hints of more to come (despite being labeled a miniseries).ĭespite a few missed opportunities, Tiny Beautiful Things does a tremendous job in exploring grief and Clare’s refusal to move forward. Scenes with Rae, which are primarily yelling matches between mother and daughter, are meant to parallel the relationship between Clare and her mother, but there could have been more time spent on the former and less on the latter. If a Season 2 is eventually ordered, Strayed knows that regardless of their path forward, the Pierce family would take us to “the interesting places that are reflective of real life and the real struggles that people have.If there’s anything that hinders Tiny Beautiful Things’ storytelling is its own refusal to focus on the present, so caught up in Clare’s past and the memories of her mother that present-day Clare’s relationships get the short end of the stick.

“And there could also be a really interesting story if they don’t do that, you know, if Clare actually makes a clearer line between her and them and between that past.” “There could be a very interesting story if they find forgiveness and mend their relationship,” she said. Clare learned that it was her father who saved their childhood home, not her brother, and she felt distraught that her mother’s abuser had taken over what was once the family’s sanctuary.Ĭould the Pierce family repair their relationship and move on from the past that so haunts Clare in the present? Strayed isn’t sure. In the Season 1 finale, we watched Clare (Kathryn Hahn) come to a sort of resolution with her daughter, Rae, but the dynamic between herself, her brother and her father remained as volatile as ever.
